JSS Intern Teachers Promise To Go On Strike

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) employed intern teachers at the Junior Secondary School (JSS) level have declared that they will go on strike in January 2024.

The teachers expressed their concerns during a demonstration in Homa Bay County on Wednesday, stating that they will not report to work if the government does not confirm their employment as permanent and pensionable.

The government hired the teachers on a contract basis last year and placed them in JSS institutions within primary schools.

The commission had promised them that they would transition to permanent and pensionable status after their internship was completed.

At a press conference in Homa-Bay town, the teachers urged the government to finalize their employment terms and facilitate their transition.

The teachers asked the government to finish their job terms and make it easier for them to transfer to senior secondary schools during a press conference in Homa-Bay town.

The tutors claim that even after a year of employment at JSS, they are not given suitable terms of employment, even though they work very hard in such institutions.

The teachers, who are members of the Kenya Union of Post elementary Education Teachers (KUPPET), had previously voiced complaints of being overworked and given assignments in their home elementary schools.

According to Siaya County Executive Secretary Sam Opondo, “JSS teachers are forced to teach primary school classes and subjects that they have not been trained to teach in some schools.”

JSS teachers from a number of Kisii County schools declared on Monday that their one-year contracts were almost over, highlighting the necessity for TSC to move them into permanent roles.

In Kisii alone, at least 1,300 teachers were hired in February for internship terms.

Representing their fellow educators, Duncan Ondieki, Everline Ongwacho, and Everline Mayaka stated that they were ready for permanent work but were reluctant to sign fresh internship contracts.

We are need a detailed breakdown of our plans for January. We are currently in uncertainty because the contracts are about to expire, Ntabo stated at a press conference held in the heart of Kisii.

The interns planned to take to the streets once more to demonstrate against TSC’s decision to hire recent grads before them.
